Re: my 8.5 yro.son is on Strattera and now im scared.
Thu, December 18, 2008 - 9:39 PMI'm not a doctor, I am not the most educated person in pharmaceuticals, but I am a parent with ADD and my daughter has it. We've both tried a few different drugs, and when either of us had a bad reaction, as we did with stratterra, we both ditched it. I would never give a drug that made her feel worse.
There are other choices. Don't give up before you've tried a few.

Re: my 8.5 yro.son is on Strattera and now im scared.
Fri, December 19, 2008 - 7:17 AMA lot of these types of medications require time for the body to adjust - strattera is a well known example of this. Where an adult might choose to suffer through the adjustment period, it is really hard for me to see any moral justification for forcing a child to go through it. The biggest health risk from taking strattera is impaired liver function, and your son's doctor should schedule monthly blood tests to check for any problems (btw that is the manufacturer's recommendation).
If you don't feel that strattera is the right medication for your son, you have a right to have the prescription changed to something else and/or change doctors. -

Re: my 8.5 yro.son is on Strattera and now im scared.
Fri, December 19, 2008 - 3:56 PMIt is a pro-drug for dexedrine (meaning that the body metabolizes it into dexedrine). It is a new drug (meaning expensive), that from what I've heard is no more effective then dexedrine and only has a moderate reduction in the likelihood of abuse. Might as well take one of the forms of dexedrine or adderall and save a lot of money. BTW from what I've heard doctors tend to avoid vivance for the reasons I've given.

Re: my 8.5 yro.son is on Strattera and now im scared.
Fri, December 19, 2008 - 3:58 PMits made by Shire Pharmaceuticals who also make Adderall and a couple others ...
they have to find ways of making more money and I hear its just a variation of Adderall XR, primarily marketed for children/teens with ADHD

Sat, December 20, 2008 - 6:05 AMin terms of one being better then the other, are you saying that vivance is better, but expensive? i don't care about the cost. the other thing is that there is a noticable change in a day or two. -

Re: my 8.5 yro.son is on Strattera and now im scared.
Sat, December 20, 2008 - 9:00 AMIt is more expensive but not better.
Unlike dexedrine or adderall, vivance will not cause a quick high not matter how it is taken. This is a concern for some, as there is a blackmarket for both adderall and dexedrine. However all three will cause a high for those taking them recreationally.

Re: my 8.5 yro.son is on Strattera and now im scared.
Wed, January 14, 2009 - 11:21 PMWhile I'm not a parent nor a psychiastrist, I AM a 15 year old who has been on just about every ADHD medication you could imagine since 5th grade. You should most definitely take your child off of Straterra if he complains about these effects. It is typically a riskier drug, and I have personally have had bad reactions to it.
He should try something like Ritalin or Adderall, the more generic and reliable ADHD meds. I don't know the situation with your son, but I don't think a 9 year old should have to be on these kinds of medications at all. It decreases happiness, and also morphs kids into people they aren't. I feel so strongly about this because from personal experience I have had bouts with depression and bipolarity, and I'm just a mere 15 year old. When I'm on it, I lose a part of my own identity; however at a stressful, competitive high school I don't have much of a choice, as chemistry and algebra II don't do themselves. But it seems ridiculous for a child who hardly has work to do to be on this medication. That's just me personally. Good luck with your son. I always contemplate going off of my medication because overall when I don't take it, I'm so much happier, and as I grow older I'm starting to realize that happiness needs to be number one priority in life. -

Re: my 8.5 yro.son is on Strattera and now im scared.
Sat, January 17, 2009 - 5:47 PMi appreciate your advice, but he already suffers from adhd, anxiety and mild depression. i feel that this is the thing to do at the moment. atleast untill we can find a happy medium for him. he is so extremely emotional and sensitive and extremely bright and i feel that his classmates are a bit put off by his knowledge. you know how cruel 9 year olds can be. -

Re: my 8.5 yro.son is on Strattera and now im scared.
Sat, January 17, 2009 - 5:55 PMStrattera and anxiety seem, to me, to be an odd mix. Strattera increases levels of a neurotransmitter that can cause anxiety. Your son may be better off with a drug cocktail to treat all his symptoms instead of a drug with the hope that it treats they all well enough. Be warned, most doctors will resist the idea (to some extent with good reason). -

Re: my 8.5 yro.son is on Strattera and now im scared.
Thu, January 22, 2009 - 1:02 PMTicks are hard to treat when they aren't a side-effect of meds. In this case, you'll have to get very different meds (type that is) and stimulants maybe out as well.
