Ritalin only works for me if I take it at the exact times! If I forget to take it completely throws me of balance . As for Concerta it doesn't get covered by our medical insurance in the Netherlands. So for me it's a financial choice as well. I 'd like to see if there are alternatives but I cant afford to take anything I have to pay for.

I took concerta for a while, and noticed a little bit of up and down. One time, the pharmacy was out of stock for a week so my dr. switched me to the SR version, which doesn't spike for me.

That's odd, I take the regular release form as do my three boys. We find the extended has the spikes and at times doesn't feel like it's working at all. I take the regular every 3.5 hrs. so I don't feel the "coming off"" bit. I was diagnosed as an adult too, after all the boys were. Sure wish I had it growing up.

Methylphenidate comes in two forms: regular release and extended release. Whether or not drugs are brand name or generics, they must be functionally identical as par FDA regulations. As for the crude bit: people who take the regular release form tend to experience spikes in the drug's effectiveness shortly after they take it and the drug's effects don't last as long. Those issues are mostly fixed by the extended release forms.

"it's crude, relatively to all the newer A.D.D. meds ....." what do you mean by crude? And what the alternatives to methylphendidate? Over here I think most commonly prescribed are Ritalin and Concerta (both methylphendidate)!

in this country, Vissen, lot of doctors dont prescribe methylphenidate anymore .. it's crude, relatively to all the newer A.D.D. meds .....

" I aggree, except for constantly forgetting to take it in, generic Methylphenidate (not Ritalin the brand but basically the same stuff) has helped me to concentrate. But I've heard a lot of other ADHDers who don't respond to it well.

On any new med just keep an eye on your own personal changes, as well as following Patrick's suggestion. Also different people react differently to different drugs. One thing that I did notice was that I pretty much crashed in the evening when I first took it. I also constatnly forget to take the second dose, so the prescriptions that I get now are for extended release.

Since people, and I speak from experience, aren't good judges of their own behavior get friends and family to tell you about any changes in your behavior, good or bad. If they see good changes then you know it is working and if they see bad ones you know you need to talk to your doctor. Outside that, carefully read the product insert, the manufacturer's not the incomplete thing most pharmacists put in, and have your doctor or pharmacist explain ANYTHING you don't understand.
