It took dexedrine XR (similar to adderall XR) for 3 years. When I went cold turkey, I was taking 40 mg a day in the mornings. I forget what I started at; 10 mg a day, maybe. Although it is a useful medication, it is addictive and can have serious side-effects. If you find that you start needing to increase the dosage more frequently - stop taking it, your body has become tolerent and you are on the fast track to becoming a junkie.

I find that limiting myself to no more than 5 days a week on meds keeps my tolerance from building up. A three-day break at least once a month is good.

I just has to do with how much dopamine your brain needs, some need more than others. Smaller doses throughout the day is better than taking it all at once so you don't peak and then drop down but that effect should be less intense on the XR. I wouldn't worry about becoming a junkie, your doctor can only prescribe so much. Here in Ca. the maximum dose a doc can prescribe is 20mg, 4 times a day and I bet that is all your doctor can prescribe as well. Other factors can contribute to the effects of any medication, if you catch a cold or flu then your meds will not be as effective. Same thing is true if you are feeling more depressed or have additional stress in your life... those things naturally make the body more fatigued and the Adderall just won't feel like it's working to the full effect. Keeping your body healthy is key. When your body is healthy, your meds will work better. I speak from years of experience with a variety of medications. If my body is run down, even my anti-depressants don't work as well. As far as taking a break, well, that can give you withdraw effects if you take it daily and then just stop. And trust me, withdrawing is NO fun. Instead, I suggest to reduce the amount for a few days rather than just stop all of it. Try just half a dose for a few days and then return to the normal dosage. NO medication should be abruptly stopped when you use it long term. You are taking this medication because your brain cannot produce enough dopamine and therefore causes you ADHD symptoms. So to just stop taking it leaves your brain depleted and this can disrupt other chemicals which can lead to other problems. If I miss just one dose of my anti-depressant, I get head rushes and dizzy if I turn my head to fast. There is a medical term for this but I forget what it's called. Missing a day of Adderall throws me into a mild state of depression along with other unpleasant symptoms as my brain scrambles to figure out what happened to the medicine. Always tapper down.

        Hope this helps.

I take 120 mg a day, 4 x 30 mg spansules. Two in the morning, one around 1 PM, and another around 4 or 5 PM. That takes me through to about 10 or 11 PM. I can go to sleep any time, though, it doesn't keep me awake.

But I've been on Adderall for about 15 years. For a while I was doing mostly Adderall, then I'd go on Ritalyn (Daytrana patch or Concerta) for a week every month or so, which helped deal with my tolerance issues.

I don't actually take the full amount every day; sometimes I only take 60 mg, some days 90, and some days only 30.

I also abused methamphetamine heavily in the 1980s, which may have something to do with my high tolerance. For 10 years before that, I used 'diet pills', mostly dexedrine, some biphetamine or Desoxyn (methamphetamine, pharmaceutical), and my tolerance never got very high. I also never got in any trouble. But when all my sources for pharmaceutical amphetamines dried up, I got into 'street speed' and lost my mind within about 3 months; continued doing it for about 8 years, going in and out of jail.

It was the next 'logical' step. All those years on diet pills, I never realized I was treating myself for a condition I had. I thought I was doing something wrong. All I knew was they made it easier for me to deal with life. So when all my sources were gone, the next 'logical' step was to go find some street speed. Bad move. Aside from all the trouble with my life & the criminal justice system, it's no doubt the reason for my high tolerance to meds. I was 40 years old before I was introduced to the concept of a 'therapeutic dose'.

I'm surprised you can get a prescription for Adderall in CA with narcotic arrests - CA law (to my understanding) makes it illegal to prescribe controlled substances to those with narcotic convictions. Hope it never becomes an issue for you.
