"... am going to look into seeing another doctor (my current one doesn't seem to be helping much, she's a sort of "Uh-huh, tell me more" type with occasional bits of advice) about it."

Unfortunately, that is how they are trained to respond (AKA: use guided questioning to help the patient figure out their own solution but never give advice). The problem with that method in your case is that problem you wish to discuss is a side-effect of the medication - there is nothing to figure-out, no behaviors or thinking patterns for you to change.

Originally, Strattera was designed to be an SSRI (an anti-depressant) and is very closely related to prosaic but didn't work every well for that but did appear to have an effect on some people with ADD which is how it became an ADD med. Nearly all the anti-depressants (they really should be thought of as mood levelers) have the side-effect that you are describing.

Since your on both Bupropion and Strattera, maybe ritallin, adderall or dexedrin would work better for you.

Good luck.

I've taken Strattera for a little over a year now and have seen both good and bad effects. I focus on tasks and follow through more. The negative side effect that concerns me most is I seem to be experiencing emotional numbing. I've only become really aware of it. A lot of the time the only feelings that seem to have a major effect on me are negative ones. I don't get more then flashes of deep joy or excitement, even things that should have me giddy. It worries me greatly and am going to look into seeing another doctor (my current one doesn't seem to be helping much, she's a sort of "Uh-huh, tell me more" type with occasional bits of advice) about it. I used to be pretty darn emotional too, even overly so, but this is the other end of the spectrum. I've lost a lot of my empathy too. It's like I've gone from being a Betazoid to a Vulcan.

I also take Bupropion SR 150mg one a day, but that doesn't seem to be known for causing this side effect. I hate to give up the ability to have more follow thru, but I don't think I can live with this. I really feel like I've lost a large part of myself.

Hated it!!! Strattera made me feel absolutely awful for the first week or two and I never really felt normal. I do a lot of yoga and I really noticed its effects during my yoga practice. my strength and endurance were seriously affected by it, and I really couldn't tell if it was helping with the ADD. Make sure you read up on its potentially nasty side-effects like permanent heart damage. I finally just stopped taking it because it was freaking me out so much. constipation was also a nightmare. I think it's a total scam but I guess things like this vary quite a bit from person to person.

I've been using strattera for about 9 months and i've been doing much better, couldn't imagine myself without it now, just hang in there for the first month or so, so your body can adapt to it, it's worth it! and if you do, you'll feel the side effects dissipate in time.

I've always had a dislike of crowded environments. It's worsened as I've aged, but not particularly in response to Straterra. In fact, I can tolerate it better on meds, but I still prefer to avoid it.

Well, I've tried Ritalin, Concerta, Amantadine AND most recently Straterra for my ADD and none of them work. Can't tolerate stimulants, the Amantadine was not really doing a lot to help me focus and the Strattera caused deperssion, suicidal thoughts and serious rage.

I see my doc next week but this is really disheartening. I am still taking BuSpar and I thank god that is helpful and keeping me steady. Just gotta wait and get this effing Strattera out of my system now.

It pisses me off to have to take drugs to approximate being "normal," whatever the hell that is!

Based on your post to the overload management thread, I would be concerned about anxiety related side effects as you sound like you are developing socialphobia-like symptoms (avoiding crowded places etc - may not be right to call it a socialphobia but its the best I can come-up with).

Side effects? I did gain weight. I don't think that was the drug, though. I think that was a result of my appetite not being constantly inhibited by a stimulant drug. Other than that, I didn't experience any significant side effects after the first month.

I don't believe Effexor is the same thing as Strattera. Effexor is Venlafaxine. Strattera is Atomexetine. They're molecularly similar, I guess, being made up of Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Oxygen. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venlafaxine and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomoxetine

Anyway, I do use Strattera. I've been on it for almost a year now, after spending most of my life on Ritalin and later Concerta. I had to stop taking Concerta because I was getting depressed and into obsessive-compulsive non-productive loops, as well as feeling increasingly distanced from the world. I didn't like it. Note, however, that I had been taking Ritalin or Concerta for years with no such side effects (almost 30!).

I was worried about switching to Strattera. I rather liked that I could have medication-free weekends and the like with Ritalin/Concerta. You must take Strattera all the time and it can take weeks or months to build up the right baseline amount in your body. Now that the dosage has been stabilized, I'm happy with it. I actually like it better than the Ritalin/Concerta. Like Concerta, I only have to take it once a day, which is easier to manage, but I feel it does a much better job of helping with mood lability. Before I used to get upset/angry and enter into a cycle where I could watch myself getting angry and responding inappropriately, but I felt unable to stop myself -- too small of a gap. With the Strattera, the gap seems larger plus I'm not as moody to begin with. I think my interpersonal relationships have benefitted a lot. In terms of concentration, I get pretty much well the same focusing effects as I had with the Ritalin/Concerta.

All in all, I'm quite happy with it, but your experiences may differ. Everyone's neurochemistry is unique. Heck, even mine changed, which is why I could no longer use Ritalin/Concerta in the first place.

I tried it once, and so did my teenage daughter. Neither of us liked it. Both of us were jittery, uncomfortable, restless...just didn't work for us. The mftr really pushes this drug on doctors, who push it on their patients. We went back to adderal.

My shrink called me back after I told her Ritalin was making me feel rotten. She said it sounded like stimulants were not for me, so she'll start me on Sattera this Friday. Anyone on it or any advice/pros/cons? I Googled it-constipation and liver damage and it takes a few weeks to kick in. Hmmm.
