I started class again today which was great..
the bad thing was that I found myself asking the professor to repeat himself a few times ..
I heard him but I didnt hear him..
almost as if it were scrambbled...
a bit frustrating.
another situation was that when I was asked a direct question, it took me a few minutes to answer..
I was literally checking the resources in my brain before I could respond..
again frustrating..
it seems that when we have open conversations I can function more efficiently... I can jump in whenever ..
as oppose to being put on the spot.. I freeze...
anyone else ever get like that ???

For me it often has put me behind socially, and it has often taken me a long time to catch on why people have been unhappy with anything that I did. I could go on forever about this. -

Wed, September 3, 2008 - 9:08 PMI forgot to answer about searching your brain for answers. While it could be a lot of things, it is often characteristic of ADD. I often find myself in situations were I have a hard time answering questions because I know the concepts, but I couldn't really spell everything. -

In the past I hve backed away from social setting because I afraid to appear intellectually incompetent...
although I have an average Iq I still struggle with keeping up..
I am fine with concepts and theories but difficulty recalling specifics on the spot...
so I usually tell my professors to come back to me....so I can get the section of info I need ...
If I talk freely I do fantastic on a topic of interest ..

Sat, December 6, 2008 - 3:45 PMsounds like auditory disruption more than ADD.
If you get evaluated for learning disabilities you can start to target your weak areas with coping mechanisms and that will definitely help with your grades and retention.
Push for testing as most DSS (disabled student services) offices will say that you have a diagnosis and that you don't need evaluation, but really you do to help you focus on what you really need. -

I know Ive read something about the inner ear and how the message can get scrambbled from there forward
so that your brain isnt recieving the right message or like a mix match and then you go HUH? -

Sat, December 6, 2008 - 11:52 PMI don't know how closely related auditory disruption is related to dyslexia but both involve problems with auditory processing. As strange as it may sound, reading is process through the audio centers of the brain after the text has been recognized in the optical centers.
've never been diagnosed with auditory disruption, but I've been diagnosed with dyslexia and I do have similar problems as Jessy.

Ask for a note taker from Student services. You are entitled to this, in the US, as a student with a disability. You may also ask to take tests in a quiet location, where you may find it less stressful/distracting. -

few years back I just decided to ask around and do research so I came up with my own diagnosis but I canhave anything....this is just what Ive discovered as my challenges since very early on when I break down all the patterns...
of which still exist today although I can cope with them much better than before...
this is my third time in college... when I wa 19 in college I couldnt focus to save my life...
I am a good note taker though ..only way I could remember..
we used to be able to record ..now they dont want you to..have to find out if I still can ...
discussions help the information stick...
I actually got an A- in statistics because I was able to look at my notes and not forced to memorize the steps I needed to calculate stuff..open book.. that was heaven!

I hear them talking and Im staring at them in the face.. just a few feet away..
I end up laughing and saying huh? what did you just say?..
luckily I can laugh with my friends who know me and my ways...
If Im talking to someone who does not know me I tend to have that intense look on my face as if Im forcing myself to listen... Im literally breaking a few words down at a time in my head so I dont lose track of the conversation....
Its so odd now that I notice the process...
other times all is good and the information goes through well.. stress is a BIG no no for me...

Most schools can do there own basic testing. Something I had to do myself when I got help in college as I hadn't been treated for ADD for more then a decade (parents who refused to have me medicated).
Often self-diagnosis of ADD, with the various test one can find online, are often fairly reliable - after all they are the same test the professionals use. Find an online test, www.amenclinics.com/store/index.php for example, take them and print out the results and then take those with you when you talk to student services.

It is no longer allowed without the express written permission of your prof - it is a copyright issue. Also a student had recorded a professor he didn't like, edited the recording and caused a lot of trouble for the prof, so to prevent that from happening again no recordings allowed.
As a former teacher: beware of open book tests, they are often much harder then the closed book ones. -

my life is proof but I will get something in writting ...
The open books are a little harder but it works for me when it comes to math in particular because I cant remember sequence very well and in statistis we didnt use a computer just to prove basic understanding and some required more than three steps to get the answer... in that case open book helped
