Strattera depression linked???

topic posted Mon, March 10, 2008 - 3:52 PM by  JMercury
Anybody experiencing general feelings of low self worth and lethargy while using Strattera for 6 mo. to 1 yr. at 80 mg or more daily??? I could use some insight, I can't decide if it's my corporate sales job, my need for constant visceral pleasure, or the Drugs...

Any info or feedback would be helpful...

I'm curious as to why you aren't discussing this with your psych.

maybe he has. we're here to share feelings and thoughts on what's working or not so much with those who can relate.

personally, stratera was bogus. not too much control over the release. mucho side-effects. i like me some adderall for selecting when i can be all's good, and when i just want to relax and eat a big fat supper at a decent hour. it's not so much an issue when i get used to it. but i'm wandering. if you haven't talked to someone about this, talk to someone about this. depression related to a medication is nothing to fuck around with. just be careful with risky behavior. try to catch yourself if you find yourself dipping into danger.

Am on effexor XR, have been for 3 years, and now just started taking strattera a week ago...
I've been wanting to lower my effexor for awhile because I think it makes me tired and groggy but my MD tells me that its not the effexor that gives me these effects. When he suggested Strattera for my ADD and I read it's side effects I was worried that it would worsen the ones from effexor....
I was right, for now anyway, I started Strattera a week ago and am feeling like I'm on double effexor, no good effect so far from this new drug , yet I hope it will help my ADD, cant stand it anymore and my doc wont give me adderall or other stimulating meds...

Strattera was a failed attempt to make an antidepressent (compare the structures of strattera and prozac, both of which are Lily drugs). During testing it was discovered that it seemed to help ADD symptoms... thus it became an ADD drug. Just like all ADD meds they work for some people but not everyone (ok, I'm still waiting to hear from the "strattera is wonderful crowd"...)

Strattera is the same chemical(s) as Effexor ... it's garbage for me anyway .. yes I felt this same way on it ...
    No good .
Adderall works MUCH better for me ...

Strattera is NOT the same chemical as Effexor, they are structurally destinct compounds.

I never tried Strattera but dislike Effexor but for others they seem to work.

Neither to a chemist (like myself) nor a doctor...

Prozac and strattera on the other hand are very closely related. In fact, stratterra had to have been a failure (it's first clinical trail was as an anti-depressant) on the road to prozac either that or it was a failed back-up compound.

You seem to misunderstand. I'm not disagreeing at all with your experience. I hate Effexor, either version, which caused severe stomach discomfort, loss of motor control, interfered with my ability to think clearly and speak, etc. You had made a statement, that Strattera and Effexor are the same chemical, which is not true - that misinformation is what I was correcting, nothing else.

Don't forget the (Effexor's) 'SSRI rebound', or what I used to call the 'limbic twitch'. I took Effexor XR (or whatever the extended release version's called) for half a week, and had those little electric brain quakes for 3 weeks.

OTOH, Wellbutrin always (and I tried smaller and smaller doses) gives me 8 hours of ringing in the ears followed by a 3 day headache.

Taking Strattera was like taking a placebo for me, however.

Adderall works best for me, too.

I had to stop taking it because of the depression, suicidal thoughts and rage. It's an ugly drug.

I was talking to my nephew's doctor a while back about strattera, and he acknowledged that it only works for about 20% of the population even though it is currently the most popular drug (to be prescribed) for ADD...

The other side of it, with some justification, is the concern over the narcotic and additive side-effects effects of amphetamines (ritalin and adderall/dexedrine). For those that actually need them, the concern is irrelavent, but for everyone else who may wish to use them as recreational drugs it is that needs to be thought about. And no, I don't want to discuss the merits of legalizing drugs vs the merits of keeping them illegal.

There is also the fact the we have been trained to think that new is better, which is part of why the marketing push works so well.

I'm just pointing out that there is more going on then what you have listed.

there's always more going on ... infinitely ...

                of course

but per your message about needing it or not ... i've spoken with a few people who have taken both stratt. and adder. and they say the difference is major meaning the stratt. wasn't nearly as effective .

damn, I should work for Shire ... !
